Isobel Hunter gives evidence to Education Committee on reading for pleasure

Libraries Connected Chief Executive Isobel Hunter MBE gave evidence to MPs this week as part of the Education Committee's inquiry into reading for pleasure, making the case for public libraries as essential national infrastructure for children's reading.

The session on 19 May brought together representatives from across the reading and library sector, including CILIP, CLOA and the Community Managed Libraries Network.

In her evidence, Isobel emphasised that libraries offer a unique, free space between home and school where children and families can discover and enjoy reading together, supported by strong book collections, skilled staff and targeted programmes. Drawing on evidence from library services across the country, she highlighted the impact of outreach, partnerships and tailored activities in reaching children who might not otherwise read for pleasure.

Isobel also set out the challenges, noting that while libraries are a statutory service, funding is not ring-fenced, leading to uneven provision and limiting consistent delivery. She explained that relatively small, targeted investment - particularly in outreach and specialist staff - could make a significant difference, helping more children develop a lifelong love of reading.

As the Committee continues its inquiry, Libraries Connected will keep working with partners across the sector to ensure the role of libraries is fully recognised in any future national approach to reading for pleasure.
