Public libraries should be part of £15m investment in children's reading, says Libraries Connected

Libraries Connected, the membership body for public libraries, has welcomed the Chancellor’s £15m investment in books for pre-school children, and called for public libraries to be part of the programme, helping it reach even more children and families through this national social infrastructure.

Isobel Hunter MBE, Chief Executive of Libraries Connected, said:

"We’re delighted to see the Government recognising the importance of reading, particularly for families feeling the pressure of the cost of living. As the Government develops this £15 million programme, public libraries should be given access to funding alongside book gifting organisations."

"Public libraries can build on book gifting by giving children a lifetime of choice and discovery. Children develop a love of reading by exploring different authors and subjects, putting aside books they don’t enjoy and coming back for something new. Public libraries make that possible every day, for free. They offer children an extraordinary range of books alongside skilled staff who help families find the stories that will inspire them."

"We estimate that for around £7.5 million each year, the Government could give automatic library membership to every newborn, backed with a community librarian in every local authority in England. This would help families keep reading, choosing and discovering books together as their children grow.”
