Tyldesley Library: A new identity for a historic building
Opinion
Introduction
Tyldesley Library has undergone a stunning transformation! Once a quiet Carnegie building steeped in history, it has been refurbished and restored, creating a vibrant, welcoming space while still maintaining and celebrating its history.
This major refurbishment project was not just cosmetic. Providing better facilities for local residents was key, making the library a dynamic hub for learning, culture, and community life. From weddings to workshops, Tyldesley is now ready to welcome everyone into a refreshed, inspiring space.
The vision behind the transformation
The vision behind the refurbishment of Tyldesley Library was clear: to preserve the charm of its historic Carnegie architecture, in keeping with its status as a listed building, whilst infusing it with a fresh, contemporary feel.
Why? To make the building work better for our residents, evolve its role as a community hub, and encourage more people to use their local library. Libraries today are cultural anchors.
Our goals included:
- Boosting creative literacy and attracting new audiences
- Creating vibrant spaces for events, weddings, and social gathering
- Opening up the first floor to create new spaces: the Colliery and Cotton Room.
A new identity for the library in 2026
Since reopening, Tyldesley Library has hosted an exciting mix of events that showcase its new identity. The Colliery Suite and Cotton Room have become the backdrop for creative workshops, author talks, and community gatherings. Our first wedding has been booked, and we are very excited to see the space come to life with this celebration.
Coming in 2026 are cultural evenings, maker sessions, and family-friendly activities which will draw different audiences, with our library becoming a buzzing hub of creativity. Highlights will include themed literary nights, author visits, community group activity and interactive story trails for children. These events not only celebrate the flexibility of the space but also foster connection, creativity, and pride in our community. Tyldesley Library is now a place where stories come alive, not only on the shelves but in shared experiences.
Some advice for other libraries
What worked? Having a flexible vision when programming is key.. Balancing weddings, workshops, and cultural events will help us reach different audiences, but this needs to be managed and prepared well. Most importantly, the design of informed spaces has turned the library into a true community anchor. We knew we needed to embrace collaboration, think beyond traditional uses, and create adaptable environments that invite creativity and connection.
One key takeaway from Tyldesley’s transformation is the power of a fresh perspective - standing out from the ‘norm’ makes libraries relevant and exciting. Flexibility in programming has been essential, allowing us to cater to weddings, activities, and cultural events under one roof. My advice for other libraries would be: dare to innovate, embrace flexible spaces, and design experiences that surprise and delight your community.
