Get the Nation Learning Week
Get the Nation Learning, run by the Learning and Work Institute, is a long-term, year-round campaign aimed at making and winning the case for lifelong learning. This year marks the first instance of the campaign's high point, Get the Nation Learning Week, running from 3 to 7 November.
Libraries Connected is proud to be a partner of Get the Nation Learning Week. Public libraries are places that have had, and continue to have, a profoundly positive impact on lifelong learning. By providing free access to information in physical and digital forms, libraries provoke curiosity and enable that curiosity to be pursued in a safe, welcoming and non-judgmental environment. Through their provision of information and digital tools and services like free Internet access, they also allow customers to pursue online education courses.
Learning and Work's Adult Participation in Learning Survey for 2025, published to coincide with Get the Nation Learning Week, reveals a sharp fall in participation rates amongst adult learners since the Coronavirus pandemic. The report reveals that just one in five adults (21%) are currently participating in learning of any kind, down from 30% in 2024. It is clear that libraries have the expertise and willpower to address this decline, but they must be adequately funded in order to do so effectively.
This Get the Nation Learning Week, libraries are encouraged to strengthen and showcase their commitment to lifelong learning in their communities. This could be through outreach – engaging learners directly through in person and online events, or open-house and drop-in sessions. It could also be by mobilising members or audiences or promoting lifelong learning work on social media. Organisations can also sign the Get the Nation Learning Charter, joining a community of stakeholders committed to building a future where everyone can learn throughout life. Signatories have the chance to learn from one another, share and understand good practice, and promote what’s working in getting the nation learning.
