Government announces Media Literacy Action Plan

Libraries Connected has welcomed the Government’s announcement of a Media Literacy Action Plan, part of its Protecting What Matters social cohesion strategy published yesterday. The charity emphasised the importance of sustained investment in staff and infrastructure so that public libraries can continue to build media literacy skills within communities.

Isobel Hunter MBE, chief executive of Libraries Connected, said:

“Public libraries have a unique role in strengthening media literacy - they combine a long history of supporting informed decision-making with the expertise of trained information professionals, high public trust and a nationwide reach. With around 4,000 libraries across the UK, most people live within a short walk of a neutral, welcoming space where they can develop the skills to navigate an increasingly complex media environment.”

“As our DSIT-funded project Innovating In Trusted Places demonstrates, public libraries are uniquely placed to build confidence in finding, creating and sharing reliable information. But long-term investment in training, equipment and outreach is essential if the sector is to keep up with rapid technological change. We look forward to working with ministers to ensure public libraries can continue helping communities build resilience to misinformation, disinformation and harmful online content.”
