Libraries Connected comments on government response to ACE review

Libraries Connected has commented on the Government's response to the Hodge review of Arts Council England.

The Government has accepted all of Baroness Hodge's recommendations, including reviewing whether the development role for libraries should be moved from Arts Council England to the British Library.

Libraries Connected previously published an open letter to culture secretary Lisa Nandy, warning that such a move could create disruption and reduce funding at a time when the sector needs stability.

In its response, the Government says:

"We recognise that we need an effective development agency which will work with the public libraries sector to develop a long-term plan. We will work with the Arts Council, the British Library and other library stakeholders to ensure the development agency can support this aim."

Isobel Hunter MBE, chief executive of Libraries Connected, commented:

"During the ACE review process our members were clear that moving the libraries development role to the British Library was not the right solution. However, we welcome the opportunity to explore what development support is needed and how that is delivered."

"At a time of rapid technological and political change, the development agency role is more important than ever – whoever takes on that role must be equipped to drive strategic growth and innovation, build resilience and provide national advocacy."
