Libraries Connected names James Pearson as next President

We're pleased to announce that James Pearson will be the next President of Libraries Connected.

James is currently Head of Service for Kent Libraries, Registration and Archives, responsible for over 100 static, mobile and prison libraries across the county, in coastal, rural and urban locations. He has worked in public libraries for more than two decades, with a career spanning frontline delivery, service development and senior leadership.

An active contributor to Libraries Connected at both regional and national level, he currently chairs the South East group and has supported sectorwide work on governance, Covid recovery and national library byelaws. Most recently, he worked with South East colleagues to lead the Power of Prevention research, using Treasury‑approved methods to show the value public libraries deliver for mental health and wellbeing.

James takes over the presidency from Ed Jewell, Chief Librarian at the Government of Jersey. He will work closely with Ed and the charity’s trustees ahead of formally taking up the role at the Libraries Connected Annual Seminar in June.

In his statement to members, James outlined priorities for his two-year term, including strengthening cross-sector partnerships, building the evidence case for libraries and supporting services through local government reorganisation.

James will be the first President under the organisation’s new governance structure, with a more visible role representing members and a greater focus on national advocacy. He will work alongside the new chair, Ben Holden.

James Pearson said:

“I've spent all my working life in public libraries so it’s a real honour to take on this role representing them at a national level. As President, I want to make sure Libraries Connected continues to be a powerful, practical advocate for libraries. With a new national strategy, local government reorganisation and a review of the development role for public libraries ahead, the need for a strong, collective voice for the sector has never been greater."

Isobel Hunter MBE, Chief Executive of Libraries Connected, said:

"James brings deep experience, credibility and a strong belief in collaboration and evidence. He will play a vital role in representing members and helping Libraries Connected continue to evolve as a confident, memberled organisation. The staff team, trustees and I are looking forward to working closely with him over next two years."

Thanks to outgoing President Ed Jewell

Ed Jewell served as President of Libraries Connected during a period of significant challenge and change for public libraries. He has also led the organisation through a major governance review, strengthening its accountability and connection to members.

During his presidency, Ed has been a strong national advocate for libraries, helping to raise their profile with government, supporting members through financial and workforce pressures, and championing the role of libraries in reading, wellbeing and community connection.

Isobel Hunter said:

"Ed has been an outstanding President. He has led with generosity, clarity and a deep commitment to public libraries and the people who work in them. His advocacy, particularly during some of the most challenging years the sector has faced, has made a real difference, and we are hugely grateful for the leadership and energy he has brought to the role."

Ed Jewell said:

"It has been a real privilege to serve as President of Libraries Connected. I have seen first‑hand the commitment, creativity and resilience of library services and staff across the country. I’m proud of what we have achieved together, and I’m delighted to be handing the baton to James, whose experience, values and passion for libraries make him an excellent choice to lead the organisation into its next chapter."
