Creating a space of possibilities

Leigh Library has redefined what a modern public library can be. Thanks to a £110,000 investment from Arts Council England’s Libraries Improvement Fund, we’ve created a space that is flexible, welcoming, and full of possibilities. This transformation reflects Wigan Council’s Progress with Unity missions, which focus on creating fair opportunities for everyone and helping our towns and neighbourhoods thrive.

The funding secured in early 2024 saw moveable shelving installed and improved accessibility with new facilities. These upgrades mean the library can shift effortlessly from a quiet study space to a vibrant performance venue.

Leigh Library: A place where the unexpected happens

We’ve certainly made the most of that flexibility this year. From an intimate gig with Ben Ottewell to a high-energy wrestling event during half term and even an indoor ice rink for Christmas, Leigh Library has become a place where the unexpected happens. This investment has brought in new audiences, including residents who said they wouldn’t normally visit a library. While they’re here we’re proud to promote everything else we offer, from books and public computers to BorrowBox and our regular programme of events.

Creating lasting memories through the library

The indoor ice rink was a perfect example of what we’re trying to achieve. The atmosphere was incredible, with families and children enjoying a festive experience right in the heart of Leigh Library. Paired with a Christmas market from local businesses between the bookshelves, the feedback was heartwarming: parents saying it was their first time skating with their children, and praise for the SEND-friendly quiet session at the end of the day. It wasn’t just about skating, it was about showing that libraries can be a space to create lasting memories and bring people together.

We’ve had some unforgettable cultural moments too. Ben Ottewell’s gig turned the library into an intimate live music venue and gave everyone a night to remember. When EPW American Wrestling came to Leigh Library in May, it brought a whole new kind of buzz to an already lively space. Families and fans filled the venue, and the atmosphere was electric, proving just how versatile our libraries can be. People loved seeing something so different in their local library! And let’s not forget the Festival of Libraries with Frank Cottrell-Boyce, which brought schools and adults together to celebrate the power of reading and creativity.

Looking back and forward

Looking back, 2025 has been a year of doing things differently. We’ve embraced change, tried new ideas, and shown that libraries provide a rich and varied service. They are places where communities come together, where culture thrives, and where wellbeing matters.

And we’re just getting started!
