Making the Most of Your Library

Making the Most of Your Library has been developed by Leicestershire Library Service in partnership with Libraries Connected for volunteers working in community managed or community led libraries.

Funded by Arts Council England and co-created with volunteers, the pilot found that the training package was more successful when library staff introduced it to volunteers.

If you are a volunteer considering using this package please get in touch with your local library service contact first, if you don’t know who that is please email Libraries Connected and they will try to put you in touch with the correct person.

This training package is free to use for non-commercial and non-profit purposes.

Minor changes may be made to reflect local practice but to maintain the integrity of the document major changes are not permitted.

A version adapted for prison libraries is also available here

2. Talking to your customers

Many customers will enjoy talking about what they’ve just read and make recommendations without realising it.

3. Maintaining good stock

The books in your library need to be in good condition, up-to-date and suitable for lending.

4. Promotions

A good display is one of the best ways to promote your stock.
